Which health insurance covers pregnancy

Every expectant mother is most concerned about the safety of her baby. Every family tries to anticipate any problems or complications that may arise during pregnancy and childbirth. But it is impossible to predict everything. Premature birth, birth defects in a newborn requiring surgery, complications during childbirth – until recently, in all these situations, the family could only rely on their own efforts. At the same time, the cost of some types of care is very high. This applies, in particular, to nursing premature infants, situations where surgery is required after birth, and the like. Which health insurance covers pregnancy?

Pros and cons

Insurance policy will cost prospective parents on average less than a package of care at a private clinic. The fact that the insurance company has the ability to choose clinics with not the highest rates, and part of the insurance for pregnant women can provide services in public medical institutions. Another important point: by purchasing a pregnancy insurance policy, expectant parents can immediately provide care for the birth. True, in some cases, this will require buying additional insurance.

The disadvantage of pregnancy insurance can be considered except that the list of services is exhaustive: as a rule, it is a standard list of consultations and examinations for the supervision of physiological pregnancy. However, if during the supervision of a pregnancy doctor prescribes additional examinations not included in the list, in some cases, they may also be covered by the policy by agreement with the insurance company.

Some insurance companies offer medical care for pregnancy only as an option in voluntary health insurance policies, often for corporate clients. If you choose an insurance policy on your own, in addition to the price, pay attention to the following:

  • What is the reputation of the insurance company, its experience, in particular, in the field of health insurance;
  • In which clinics you will be covered by insurance. Everything is important – from their reputation to the location, because you will have to go to the obstetrician-gynecologist for all nine months of pregnancy, and, in later terms, probably more than once a month;
  • What services the policy covers: whether inpatient care, treatment of pregnancy complications, and emergency care are included. Whether additional tests and treatment will be paid for, if prescribed by the doctor;
  • What are the limits on expenses?
